For an animal shelter to function humanely, the number of animals coming in and leaving needs to be equal. When more animals come in than go out, the shelter becomes overcrowded, and animals can’t get the individualized humane care they need and begin to suffer. Shelters all over the country, including MAC, are being asked to take in way more animals than they can humanely care for, and we receive pleas for help from other organizations almost daily.
Here at MAC, we are trying to navigate this crisis by holding animals in temporary pop-up kennels, staff cubicles, and every other available space in our building, and even putting multiple animals in spaces designed to hold just one. We know we sound like a broken record at this point, but we are in dire need of our community to help us. These are not humane options. It’s not fair to the animals.
While MAC prides itself on being a facility that does not euthanize animals simply for time or space, we are at the breaking point. Either we will have to close our doors to new intakes completely or we will have to make impossibly heartbreaking decisions about euthanizing adoptable dogs in our care to make space.
Are you hearing us? We are pleading with you to help us avoid either of these unthinkable options. We’re heartbroken that we’ve come to this point.
If you’ve thought about adopting a new dog, now is the time to do so. We have nearly 150 animals available for adoption (at the time we are writing this post) who have been waiting for hundreds of days, and all of them deserve to be in a loving home, not an overcrowded or too-small kennel in a loud and stressful shelter. Even if you can’t adopt, please consider becoming a temporary foster, or share our adoptable pet information with friends and family.
From June 2nd – June 9th, 2023, adoption fees will be $10 for all adult animals (6 months and older). Please help us spread the word.We want more than anything to keep our commitment of not euthanizing for space or time, but we can’t do it without you.
